What is hyperhidrosis treatment?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating which is a condition that affects around 1-2% of the population.

Constant excess sweating makes it difficult to carry out many normal everyday activities and, whilst not posing a serious threat to health, Hyperhidrosis can cause embarrassment and skin irritation and inflammation.

The effectiveness of this particular treatment stems from the ability to target the specific mechanisms of sweat production. Botulinum Toxin injections block the release of acetylcholine which is the neurotransmitter for stimulating sweat glands. Patients can relax knowing for a few months the excessive sweating will stop and sweat patches on shirts or clammy hands will not be a worry.

Your Questions Answered

Hyperhidrosis injections are made of botulinum toxin (commonly referred to by the brand name BOTOX®), a naturally occurring product. It is produced by clostridium botulinum bacteria. Although there are number of Botulinum Toxin prescription products available on the market, at Aspire Clinic, we offer Allergan’s Botox ®, which is the original and we believe the best Botulinum Toxin product.

Immediately after the treatment, there may be some slight redness and swelling at the injection site, which usually subsides within 48 hours. Bruising is also possible – some medications can increase the risk of this, so patients may be advised to stop taking these before the treatment.

Potential side effects include temporary injection-site reactions such as:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Bruising
  • Discolorations

Side effects normally subside within a week.
